Elizabeth J. “Penny” León, age 60, of Delaware City, DE, passed away on Wednesday, September 23, 2020.

Born in Wilmington, DE on May 3, 1960, she was a daughter of the late Michael and Bonnie (Heeren) Schirling. Penny worked as the activities director at the Governor Bacon Health Center. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing games on Facebook. Above all, Penny cherished time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Penny is survived by her husband of 40 years, Donato León, Sr.; children, Donato León, Jr. (Brenda) of Newark, Thomas León (Cara) of Wisconsin and T.T. León of Delaware City; grandchildren, Alexus, Ronnie, Hayley, Little Nado, Casey, Riley and Joey; and siblings, Michael Schirling, Ronda Pfarner, Carolyn King, Patty Lahman and Douglas Schirling.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 2 pm until 3 pm on Friday, September 25, 2020, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 275 East Main Street, Middletown, DE, where a memorial service will begin at 3 pm. Face masks will be required for all in attendance. Interment will be held privately.

  • I’m am so sad. Penny was like my little sister. I met Penny when I was 11 and she was 8 through Aunt Sue. The three of us spent a lot of hours at her and Donado table laughing as young mothers. She and I grew up together, we went to school together, we got our NA certificate together, we worked together, and she was my neighbor for many years, she was my family. I will miss her awful. I will keep the family in prayers. I love you guys.

  • I am very sorry to hear about Penny’s passing. I worked with her at Governor Bacon Health Center. She loved all the Governor Bacon residents and would go above and beyond to help them have a good quality of life and be happy. She also deeply loved her family and was very proud of each family member. Many prayers to the Leon family as you go through this difficult time.
