Ernest M. “Ernie” Carlisle, Sr.

Ernest M. “Ernie” Carlisle, Sr., age 91, of Smyrna, DE, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Monday, September 18, 2023.
Born in Felton, DE, on April 13, 1932, he was a son of the late James A. and Mary Ethel (Seward) Carlisle. Ernie proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He worked as a harness horse trainer at Brandywine Raceway and Dover Downs, where he also spent 14 years working in track maintenance and landscaping. In addition, Ernie was a groundskeeper for U.L. Harman Lumber Co. in Marydel, DE.
Ernie was a member of USTA and American Legion Post No. 14 in Smyrna. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching NASCAR and was a stock car enthusiast.
In addition to his parents, Ernie was preceded in death by his son, Ronald E. Carlisle; and siblings, Arthur J. Carlisle, Pearl R. Smith, Floyd I. Carlisle, Lillian A. Stayton, Clarence N. Carlisle, Harry C. Carlisle, Roland L. Carlisle, Edgar J. Carlisle, Lester N. Carlisle, Thelma M. Kemp, Leon F. Carlisle, and Harold K. Carlisle. He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy A. (Bryant) Carlisle; children, William E. Carlisle (Dawn), Ernest M. Carlisle, Jr. (Bonnie), Lisa Cahall (Tony), and Rick Haas (Lisa); grandchildren, Kristina (Tom), Brittney, Ernest III, Casey, Jacob, Elise, Caleb (Melissa), Eric, Tony, Matt, Sam, Kayla and Alyssa; and great-grandchildren, Ernest IV, Layla, Kingston, Corey, Colton, and Luca.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5 pm until 7 pm on Friday, September 29, 2023, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. A funeral service will begin at 10:30 am on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE.

So happy we got to see him this summer. I’ll miss his smile and that belly laugh…especially when he told a joke. I’m sure Mom was waiting for him with open arms.
