She was also a member of the Newark Senior Center, where she was active in the drama club and all of its productions. Her other notable affiliations included membership in the education honor society Kappa Delta Pi, the scholastic honor society Phi Kappa Phi, and the prestigious high IQ society, Mensa International.

Mrs. Carman was a talented needlework artist and delighted in creating lovely crochet and embroidery pieces as gifts for family and friends. She is survived by her children, David Carman (Jeanne) of Elkton, MD, Melinda Carman (Larry) of Skiatook, OK, Michele Carman of Aurora, CO, John Carman (Marilee) of Lawson, MO, and Richard Carman (Rebecca) of North East, MD; stepsons, Mike Carman (Jeanne) of Winder, GA, and Harold Merritt (Juanita) of Pearland, TX; brother, Hubert Mayo (Ruth) of New Lebanon, OH; sister-in-law, Joyce Mayo of Windermere, FL; 16 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Geraldine, and brothers, Lewis, Sydney, and Perry.
