Ethel Bartlett Webb Aastad
Mrs. Ethel Bartlett Webb Aastad, age 101, formerly of Delaware City, DE, died Thursday, March 17, 2011, at her residence, the Country House in Wilmington, DE.
A native Delawarean, Mrs. Aastad was born in Wilmington in 1909, daughter of the late J. P. Bartlett and Anna Palmer Rust Bartlett. She lived in Smyrna and graduated from Smyrna High School. She married John T. Webb of Delaware City and lived there, in the same home, for 55 years. She was employed as a secretary for the County Levy Court and The Delaware Highway Department until her retirement.
In 1967, at age 58, she began a second career as a guide at Winterthurs Historical Houses of Odessa. She continued to be employed until she was 93 years old, when Winterthur temporarily closed the Odessa properties in 2003. She was a member of the Winterthurs Quarter Century Club.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, John T. Webb, second husband, Peter J. Aastad, sons, John T. Jack Webb III and Henry P. Webb, stepdaughter, Margaret Raine, sisters, Anna B. Nelson and Katherine Bartlett Kunkel, and cousin, Miriam Bishop Dean. She is survived by her daughter, Ethel-Anne Roome and son-in-law, Ian, of Southbury, CT; stepson, Andreas Andy Aastad and daughter-in-law, Carol, of Lancaster, PA; granddaughter, Olivia Paige Roome of Southbury, CT; 6 step grandchildren; niece, Alice Kunkel Davis of Harrisburg, PA; and cousins, Jeanne Webb Tribbitt of Rehoboth, DE, and Sherman Webb of Columbia, SC.
A memorial service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, March 26th, at Christ Episcopal Church, 222 Clinton Street (Third and Clinton Streets), Delaware City, DE. Interment will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mrs. Aastad may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, PO Box 523, Delaware City, DE 19706.
