Eugene Christmann III
September 3, 1947 - July 22, 2020
Eugene Christmann III, age 72, of Newark, DE for 67 years, passed away on Wednesday, July 22, 2020, at Select Specialty Hospital in Wilmington, DE.
Born in Brooklyn, NY on September 3, 1947, he was a son of the late Eugene and Harriet (Reimers) Christmann, Jr. Eugene graduated from Christiana High School in 1965 where he was a high school athlete and played baseball and basketball. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1966 during the Vietnam War and served on the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Tanager.
Eugene started his working career as a Wilmington Police Officer and subsequently became a Newark Police Officer. He left the police force after four years and started his own business doing home improvements. Eugene later transitioned his business into roofing and asphalt. He then worked various jobs in security, paving and sales. For the past twelve years, Eugene volunteered and then worked part time for Aetna Hose Hook and Ladder in Newark, DE, as a first responder and ambulance driver.
In addition to his twelve-year membership with Aetna Hose Hook and Ladder, he was also a member of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) as well as a volunteer EMT with Right Coast Pro Wrestling, where they added a second star to their logo in honor and memory of Eugene.
A dedicated family man, Eugene was completely devoted to his wife and two boys. He and his son, Jamie, had a particularly strong bond. In his spare time, Eugene enjoyed golfing, going to auctions, yard work and working with his hands. Known for his great sense of humor, he was liked by all and had many friends, including his weekly Sunday Morning Breakfast Group.
In addition to his parents, Eugene was preceded in death by his son, Eugene Scott “Chris” Christmann. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Gail (Hunsinger) Christmann, with whom he would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on August 1st; son, Jamie Christmann; and brother, Jon Christmann of Timonium, MD.
All services will be held privately, with a memorial service to be scheduled once it is safe to congregate.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Eugene’s memory to Aetna Hose Hook and Ladder, P.O. Box 148, Newark, DE 19715.

Mrs. Christmann: I was saddened to hear about Gene’s passing. We played softball on the Fraternal Order of Police and Goodchild’s softball teams in Newark in the 1970s. His positive attitude, great smile, personality, and sense of humor were enjoyed by his teamates. And he was a hell-of-a-good ball player. My thought and prayers are with you.

To the Christmann family:
Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss. Gene and Jon were our next door neighbors and friends in Brookside. I remember fondly those days of our youth. Skip kept us up to date on Gene’s couagious fight to beat the virus. We prayed that he would pull through. But the Lord called, and Gene answered. May you find peace in the happy memories of Gene and his time well spent on this earth.
God bless you all.

I first met Gene at an auction many years ago. From watching him move about, laughing and bidding, it became apparent that this was a person who should be a friend in my life. My goal was to get to know him. Good decision. Over the years a group of us have had so many enjoyable moments at the auction lunch room solving world problems, telling jokes and talking and laughing. Gene was very mysterious. He would be there and suddenly he was gone. On many occasions he would asked me to bid on something for him in case he did not return on time. He must not have respected my bidding skills, 99% of the time he returned just seconds before his item of interest was offered for sale. Each time I saw Gene my question to him was where is Uncle Billy? It could be 2:00 pm and Gene would grin and say we were suppose to meet for breakfast at eight, but I haven’t seen him yet. These two friends had a wonderful relationship and I know he will be missed by Bill, as well as my all who had the privilege of knowing him. So long Gene and thanks for your friendship.
