Mr. George W. Adams, Jr., age 85, of Daytona Beach, FL, formerly of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Monday, May 28, 2012.
A native Delawarean, George was born in Wilmington on November 27, 1926, son of the late George W. Adams, Sr. and Ethel S. Tattersall Adams. He proudly served in the US Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946.
In civilian life, George enjoyed a diverse career. In early years, he drove for Anchor Motor Freight, went on to own and operate several service stations and a towing service, operated Two Rivers Marina in Maryland, and later owned and operated Adams True Value Hardware and Marine in the Penn Mart Plaza in New Castle for many years before retiring to Florida in 1990.
He had an early interest in model trains, was very skilled in carpentry, enjoyed boating on the Chesapeake Bay and took meticulous care of the many boats he owned over the years. In recent years, he became an avid collector of old cowboy and Shirley Temple movies, and became quite skilled in using his home computer.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Melva Mae Adams; daughters, Susan Maroudas of Wilmington, DE, Karen Adams (Ken Glanding) of Middletown, DE, and Jackie Foraker of Wilmington, DE; stepsons, Edward Harper (Kathy) of Michigan and Thomas Harper of Virginia; 7 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Ethel Fucetola, Helen Pokoiski, and Dorothy Neff.
Visitation will begin at 7 pm on Wednesday, June 13, 2012, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, followed by a memorial service at 8 pm.
