Geraldine F. Matthews
Mrs. Geraldine F. Matthews, known fondly as “Gerry,” age 71, of Middletown, DE, passed away on Friday, July 13, 2012.
A native Delawarean, Mrs. Matthews was born in Wilmington on November 6, 1940, daughter of the late James Winnington and Dorothy Hafner Winnington. She was a talented homemaker who devoted her life to caring for her beloved family.
Mrs. Matthews was a devout Catholic and a longtime member of Holy Spirit parish. More recently, she attended St. Joseph’s parish in Middletown, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister.
In her leisure hours, she greatly enjoyed bowling with friends. A gifted cook and baker, she delighted in sharing special meals with her family.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 51 years, Mervin E. Matthews; son, Brian Matthews and wife Shirley of Middletown; daughter, Teresa Matthews of Wilmington; brothers, Jimmy Winnington of Wilmington, Joseph Winnington of Wilmington, Francis Winnington of Newark, and Thomas Winnington of Wilmington; sisters, Dorothy Hill of Wilmington, Bernadette Lugano of New Castle, Mary Ann Lacey of Newark, Catherine Gott of Smyrna, Elizabeth Kohl of New Castle, and Patricia Saxton of Newark; step grandsons, Keith Bromwell and Jason Bromwell; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, John Winnington and Dennis Winnington.
Visitation will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm on Monday, July 16, 2012, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 am on Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at Holy Spirit R.C. Church, 12 Winder Road, Garfield Park, New Castle, DE 19720. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle.
