Geraldine T. “Gerry” Simpkiss
April 2, 1932 - May 2, 2021
Geraldine T. “Gerry” Simpkiss, age 89, of Dover, DE, formerly of Newark, DE, and Plantation, FL, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 2, 2021 surrounded by family.
Born in Wilmington, DE, on April 2, 1932, she was a daughter of the late William and Regina (McLaughlin) Acton. Gerry dedicated 20 years of service as a cafeteria worker for the Broward County School District in Florida. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, and a former member of the New Castle Senior Center. In her free time, Gerry took pleasure in crocheting.
In addition to her parents, Gerry was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, James Simpkiss and siblings, Regina Kern, Mary DiGiacoma, Patricia Bennett, Bernadette Strzalka, Gertrude McGuinness, Barbara McNulty, Margaret Farrell, and William Acton, Jr.
She is survived by her children, Regina Camponelli (George) of Middletown, James Simpkiss of Tampa, FL, Mary Hemphill (Bruce) of New Castle, Nancy Stevenson (Rich) of Townsend, Charles Simpkiss (Brenda) of Plantation, FL, and Lawrence Simpkiss (Sharon) of Dover; sister, Sr. Frances Acton OSF of Aston, PA; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren (who lovingly called her “Old Grandmom”).
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Friday, May 7, 2021, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 12 noon on Friday, May 7, 2021, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton R.C. Church, 345 Bear Christiana Road, Bear, DE. Face masks are required for all in attendance. Interment will be held in Hollywood, FL, at a later date.
The family would like to thank Brookdale Senior Living and Season’s Hospice for their loving care of Gerry.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gerry’s memory to the American Cancer Society, 92 Read’s Way, Suite 205, New Castle, DE 19720.
