Gilbert A. Whiteside

Mr. Gilbert A. Whiteside passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 4, 2013, at the age of 93.
Gilbert was born and raised in Wilmington and lived in New Castle. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Whiteside and Jesse Connor Whiteside, his wife, Ellen Wiley Whiteside, and by all of his brothers and sisters, Annabelle, Mildred, Aleta, William, Ellis, Frank, and Donald.
Gilbert was a 1938 graduate of Wilmington High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and president of his class. He married Ellen, the love of his life, in 1941.
He enlisted in the US Army Air Corps at the beginning of World War II and proudly served as a C-47 pilot in the 49th Troop Carrier Squadron. During his military career, he served in the European Theater and dropped paratroopers during the D-Day invasion of Normandy.
Following the war, Gilbert and his wife settled in New Castle. He made his career as an insurance agent for 40 years and later became a driver for the Martin Auto Group. He was a founding member and Past Commander of the American Legion Joseph B. Stahl Post #30.
He is survived by his sons, Ronald Whiteside of Elkton, MD, and Gilbert Whiteside, Jr. and wife Deborah of Newark; grandsons, Travis, Benjamin, Eric and Jonathan Whiteside; and many loving nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 am on Friday, July 12, 2013, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, where visitation will begin at 10:30 am. Entombment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church, 300 E. Basin Road, New Castle, DE 19720; or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
