Harry Phillips, Jr.

January 27, 1957 - March 25, 2019

          Harry Phillips, Jr., age 62, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Monday, March 25, 2019, surrounded by his loving family.

          Born in Wilmington, DE on January 27, 1957, he was the son of the late Harry and Edna (Cannon) Phillips, Sr.  Harry graduated from William Penn H.S. in 1975.  Following graduation, he enrolled in the U.S. Air Force, where he proudly served until 1979.  Upon his honorable discharge, he went to work for Duke Energy at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, where he retired after many years of dedicated service.

          In Harry’s earlier years, he enjoyed camping with this family, working on cars and playing the drums.  He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Caesar Rodney #3.  Harry will always be remembered as a loving father and grandfather who will be dearly missed.

          In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Margaret White and Becky Owens.  Harry is survived by his daughters, Jacqueline Finner (James) and Rachel R. Phillips (Matthew); former wife and dear friend, Susan Messick; sisters, Sandy Phillips, Dora Vickers and Doris Miller; grandchildren, PFC Johnathan Bailey, Estell Finner; Brytney Finner, Destiny Cordell and Sophia Pettinato; and father-in-law, Thomas J. Montgomery, Sr.

          A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11:30 am until 12:30 pm on Thursday, April 18, 2019, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a memorial service will begin at 12:30 pm.  Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.

          In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Harry’s memory to the American Heart Association, 200 Continental Drive, Ste. 101, Newark, DE 19713.

  • So sorry to hear about Harry’s passing. I worked with Harry Sr at the Post Office. I knew Edna through Harry Sr and Tom Cannon. I went to school with Dora and Doris. Prayers to you all.

  • James Finner is related to me. His mother is my cousin Patty’s son. I love that Delaware has many related people. Again so sorry for your loss.
