James Andrew LeNoir

James Andrew LeNoir, age 96, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Friday, October 4, 2019, surrounded by his loving wife of 70 years and six children.

Born on September 14, 1923, he was the son of the late Andrew and Genevieve (nee Lawler) LeNoir. Jim spent his entire life in New Castle, growing up on 5th Street in Old New Castle and lived his adult life in Leedom Estates.

He served in the Army Air Corp between 1943-1945. Jim flew the 855th Bombardment Squadron of the 491st Bombardment Group, Eighth Air Force, from North Pickenham Airfield, England. He survived 35 combat missions over Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Belgium as a ball and waist gunner aboard a B-24 Liberator heavy bomber.

Jim worked at Hercules as a Senior Lab Technician. Following 45 years of service, he retired at the age of 62. In retirement, he enjoyed being a sports official, woodworking, and a longtime member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his loving wife, Catherine (Duffy) LeNoir; six children, Mary Ann DiSabatino (Guy) of Rehoboth, DE, Karen Sammons (Jeff) of Wilmington, DE, Andrew LeNoir (Cindy) of Lansdale, PA, Dennis LeNoir (Diane) of New Castle, DE, Brian LeNoir of Wilmington, DE, and Nanette Tafelski of New Castle, DE; eighteen grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9:15 am until 11:15 am on Tuesday, October 15, 2019, at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, 801 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:30 am. Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.

  • Mr. Lenoir is the epitome of the greatest generation whom I admired and respected very much. I only regret that I did not get to spend more time with him. I am honored to have met him.

  • We were very sorry to hear of your loss. We enjoyed Jim’s company and help at all of the Knights functions, he was one of the few that participated in every event when I was Grand Knight, my wife always said he was a big help in the kitchen without complaning
