James E. Maxwell

James E. Maxwell, age 95, of Bear, DE, passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Wilmington, DE, on March 21, 1923, he was a son of the late William J. and Elizabeth “Bess” (Brick) Maxwell. James was a proud survivor of the Utah Beach Landing on D-Day during WWII. Following his service, he worked as a supervisor with the Delaware River Bay Authority for 25 years at the West East toll.

A true Blue Hen fan, James held football season tickets for more than 60 years. He enjoyed golfing, shuffle board and visits to Delaware Park. James’ fondest memories were made while spending time with his family. He was a lifetime member of Minquadale Fire Company and American Legion Stahl Post.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Iva (Smith) Maxwell and siblings, William, Harry, Sarah, Elsie, Mary, George and Leatrice. He is survived by his children, James Casey Maxwell (Joan L.) of Middletown, Donna M. Walstrum (Reg) of Bear and Linda Outten (Nelson) of Middletown; 6 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren.

The family would like to send a special thank you to James’ nurse, Lisa of Heartland Hospice.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11 am until 1 pm on Friday, December 14, 2018, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 1 pm. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in James’ memory to Minquadale Fire Company, 129 E Hazeldell Ave, New Castle, DE 19720.

  • So sorry to read of Mr. Maxwell’s passing. I remember spending many Saturdays with Jimmy and my Dad; Ray Schaal at the Delaware Football games both in Newark and on the bus trips. He lived a very full life and now can spend his time with other Blue Hen fans and friends and family on the other side. RIP and my condolences to the family.
