September 19, 1932 - May 14, 2020

Joann Marie Cates, age 87, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2020.

Born in Pedricktown, NJ on September 19, 1932, she was a daughter of the late Pasquale and Angelina (Russo) Cassano. Joann was a graduate of Penns Grove High School in 1950. While working as a bartender in the late 1960’s she met the love of her life, Walter “Alex” Cates.  For more than 30 years, she was a dedicated employee at Blue Cross Blue Shield in Delaware.

Joann was a very social person and made many friends throughout her life. Known for her parties, she enjoyed entertaining and cooking for friends and family, especially at Christmas, New Year’s, and at family gatherings.  After retirement, she enjoyed going to the New Castle Senior Center and taking walks at Battery Park. In her younger years, she served as the chairperson of the Penns Grove Elks.

She had a keen eye for art and loved making many unique pieces of fine art. Joann loved being out on the water and going boating with her husband. She had a special love and passion for the many kitty cats she had over the years.

In addition to her parents, Joann was preceded in death by 7 siblings. She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Alex, who will dearly miss his “beautiful bride”. She is also survived by her brother, Pasquale Cassano and several nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.

All services will be held privately.

In memory of Joann’s love for animals, contributions in her memory may be made to the Delaware SPCA, 455 Stanton Christiana Road, Newark, DE 19713.
