Mr. John D. Cox, Sr., age 52, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Monday, November 19, 2012.
Mr. Cox was a native Delawarean, born in Wilmington on July 26, 1960, and was a graduate of St. Elizabeth High School. He made his career as an insulator with Country Insulation, a job he truly enjoyed and did very well.
A devoted family man throughout his life, Mr. Cox delighted especially in caring for his beloved grandchildren. His happiest times were always those spent in the company of family and friends. In his leisure hours, he greatly enjoyed exercising at the gym and watching all kinds of sports.
Mr. Cox will be long and lovingly remembered as a wonderful man who truly cared for other people. He was generous, compassionate, and kind to everyone. Occasionally strict, but always fair and supportive, he taught his children to respect themselves and others and to work hard to accomplish their goals. He led by example–a humble, honest man who lived life with love and courage.
He was preceded in death by his son, John D. Cox II, his mother, Janet Brainard Burke, and his father-in-law, Richard Jordan. He is survived by his daughter, Shanon M. Roop and her husband Eric of New Castle; his former wife and companion, Donna M. Cox of Wilmington; his loving “second mother,” Donna Jordan of Wilmington; brothers, Gary Cox of Bear, Mark McKamey of Wilmington, and Michael McKamey of Wilmington; sister, JoAnne McKamey of Wilmington; grandchildren, Mackenize Star Roop, Cameron D. Roop, and Carson D. Roop; former companion, Lorraine Burns; stepson, Ryan Burns; step grandson, Hayden Burns; and many extended family members and close friends.
A funeral service will be held at 5 pm on Monday, November 26th, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, where visitation will begin at 3 pm. Committal services will be held at 1 pm on Wednesday, November 28th, at Cathedral Cemetery, 2400 Lancaster Avenue, Wilmington.
