John Eugene “Gene” Bedwell

January 23, 1927 - November 4, 2019

John Eugene “Gene” Bedwell, age 92, of Newark, DE, passed away on Monday, November 4, 2019.

A native of Elkton, MD, he was the son of the late George Stewart and Viola (Finn) Bedwell.  Gene was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and a member of the VFW Post 495 in Newark.  He revered the American flag and flew it proudly.  At the time of his retirement from Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, he was Chief of the Velocity Measurements Section.

Gene spent many years researching his family’s genealogy and documenting local history.  It is believed that his maternal grandmother, the late Mary Clara Rambo Finn, was a descendant of Peter Rambo, who arrived in Delaware aboard the Kalmar Nyckel in 1638 to become one of the first permanent European settlers.  Gene was a former member of the Holy Angels Athletic Association.  He was also an usher at Holy Angels R.C. Church and enjoyed Notre Dame football.

In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Geraldine “Gerry” Bedwell.  He is survived by his children, Neal E. Bedwell, Maureen “Mo” Buckworth (Mark), Eileen Bedwell and Lynne Latino (Ken); sister, Patricia Mainelli; grandchildren, Matthew Buckworth (Mandy), Hunter Buckworth, John Latino, Sarah Latino, Christina Bedwell and Alexis Bedwell; and great granddaughter, Charlotte “Charlie” Buckworth.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Tuesday, November 12, 2019, at Holy Angels R.C. Church, 82 Possum Park Road, Newark, DE, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 am.  Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Gene’s memory to Little Sisters of the Poor, 185 Salem Church Road, Newark, DE 19713.
