Mr. Joseph W. “Smokey” Cylc, age 93, of Wilmington, DE, formerly of Chester, PA, passed away on Thursday, October 4, 2012.
Mr. Cylc was born in Chester, PA, on May 14, 1919, son of the late Boleslaw Cylc and Eva Czakorowski Cylc. A US Army veteran of World War II, he proudly served his country in the Pacific Theater, primarily in New Guinea. In civilian life, he enjoyed a diverse and interesting career, beginning as a police officer for the City of Chester. He would go on to assist in the management of his family’s business, the former Stress Brothers Hardware Store, also in Chester, for 22 years. In 1968, he accepted a position working in various state stores in Delaware County, PA, retiring as a store manager in 1981.
A devout Catholic throughout his life, Mr. Cylc was a faithful parishioner of St. Hedwig’s R.C. Church in Chester and its Holy Name Society for many years. He was also a longtime member of the American Legion Szymanski-Rywacki Post #546 in Chester.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Helen M. Stryczniewicz Cylc, in 2010, and by his siblings, Walter Cylc, Edward Cylc, Helen Krasowski, Eleanor Rudewicz, Stella Teofilak, Sophie Sarnocinski, and Ginger Antonelli. He is survived by his son, Lawrence J. Cylc, Sr. and wife Deborah of Claymont, DE; grandchildren, Linda M. Cylc, Lt. Joseph S. Cylc, and Lt. Lawrence J. Cylc, Jr.; and great grandchildren, Lawrence J. Cylc III, William Francis Cylc, and Kate Collins Cylc.
Visitation will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm on Monday, October 8th, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. A funeral service will be held at 8:30 am on Tuesday, October 9th, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
