Karl Joseph Hof, age 97, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 15, 2021.

Born in Nyack, NY, on January 25, 1924, he was the son of the late Joseph Karl and Anna Marie Louise (Kröger) Hof. Karl proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. After his service to his country, he worked as a banker for Manufacturers Hanover Trust Co. in Manhattan, retiring after 45 years of service. Karl remained a member of Wesley Way United Methodist Church in McDonough, GA and was most recently an active participant at St Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Newark. In his spare time, Karl enjoyed bowling, fishing, watching professional wrestling, and most of all, spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, Karl was preceded in death by his wife, Zelma Aldean (Hawkenberry) Hof. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Karen Ann Waldmann and Rev. Russell Waldmann of Griffin, GA and Linda Mae Grund and David William Grund, Sr. of Newark; grandchildren and spouses, Lisa M. Helvie  and Dr. Forrest C. Helvie of Newington, CT, Christopher J. Waldmann of Towson, MD, Dr. David William Grund, Jr. and Esther J. Grund of Wilmington; and Katharine L. Grund of Wilmington; and great-grandsons, Noah F. Helvie and Caleb C. Helvie, both of Newington, CT, David William Grund III and Victor J. Grund, both of Wilmington.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 pm until 7 pm on Monday, November 22, 2021, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 7 pm. Face coverings will be required for all those in attendance not immunized with the COVID-19 vaccine per the Governor of Delaware. Interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Karl’s memory to the charity of the donor’s choice.

  • Always enjoyed going out to a restaurant with Karl we both love soup. Karl would say he he wanted his soup hot and before the meal arrived. I would say I wanted mine the same way. He will be missed.

  • May Mr. Hof rest in everlasting peace. He left a lasting impression of love and kindness on everyone he met, and will live in our hearts forever and ever.

  • I always enjoyed conversations with Mr. Hof when I worked at Millcroft. Such an inspiration….always a man on a mission.
