Melvin Culver, Jr.

Melvin Culver, Jr., age 74, of Newark, DE, passed away at his home peacefully, with his family around him on Thursday, September 14, 2023.

Born in Laurel, DE on April 6, 1949, he was a son of the late Melvin and Helen Culver, Sr. Melvin proudly served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam war as a SeaBee. He made his career with Chrysler, where he later retired after 30 years of loyal service. Melvin then worked for Jersey Fresh Farm Market delivering produce for 16 years. He is fondly remembered for his sense of humor, his big heart, and his commitment to provide and care for his family. Melvin was a Christian and devoted Green Bay Packers fan who would help anyone and gave unconditionally to those in need.

In addition to his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Culver. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy Culver; children, Melvin “Boo” Culver III (Renee) and Brande Crutchfield (Nathan); grandchildren, Kyle Culver (Sara), Samuel Culver (hopefully soon to be daughter-in-law, Nicole Paradis), Bradley Crutchfield, and Zachary Crutchfield; and great grandchild, Logan Culver “His Little Man”.

The Culver family would like to extend a special thank you to the nursing staff at Christiana Care.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 1 pm until 2 pm on Friday, September 22, 2023, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 2 pm. Burial service will be held separately  Friday, October 6, at 11am in the chapel of Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.

  • I am so sorry for your loss . Mel was a great guy and i loved giving him a hard time when he came in to see us . He would give it right back though. I was truly blessed to have met you . You will be forever missed .

  • Honey i Miss you so much already, My Heart is Broken, but i can’t be selfish, because i know how hard life has been to you for a very Long time, and you are no longer in pain, and knowing this, does ease some of my pain, but I still miss you so much, we did have many up and downs during our 53 year’s together, but i am so glad gave you for 53 year’s, My Love for you will never fade, look down on me baby and keep an eye on me, Sadly missed, Your Wife, Nancy and Lucy xoxoxo

  • I couldn’t have picked a better brother in law than Melvin, he was a great husband , father , grandfather and a good brother in law.
    Melvin loved his family and we all loved him very much
    Thank you Heavenly Father for the 74 years he had on earth, I will miss that infectious smile and those big dimples he carried around
    I know we will meet again soon and I can’t wait for all the stories you will have to tell.

  • Mel was a great guy , him and Nancy made me feel like family and the craziest last was that I was actually serving them. I feel proud to of gotten to know these 2 and that such genuine kind people were interested in knowing about me. Thank you for the good conversations and kind treatment may the memories help fill the sadness. May the sadness bring up memories that lead to smiles.

  • For the short time I’ve had to know Mr. Culver it’s been a wonderful experience. Very pleasant man with lots of wonderful stories. He has done well with the family he and Nancy have raised, you couldn’t ask for a better group of people. He will be missed by all who knew him. Rest in Peace my friend.

  • Mel, what can I say!! Everybody that knew him became friends with him. Growing up and being friends with Boo I also got to know Mel and he became my friend and a father figure also. He made me feel like one of his own. As time and distance went by, I didn’t see or talk to him. I regret that. I thought about him a lot and will never forget everything that he has done for me. He will live forever in my heart and in my mind.
