Merle Ruth Jones
Merle Ruth Bannister Jones, age 81, of Delaware City, DE, passed away on December 7, 2011.
Born on August 13, 1930 in Oklahoma, Merle lived on the family sheep ranch with her parents, Edwin Bannister and Meta Vera Goddard Bannister, her brother, Edwin Eugene, and sisters, Catherine and Marilyn. During the Great Depression, the family moved to Roswell, NM, where Merle grew up. In 1947, she met Vernon Jones, a sergeant stationed in Roswell. They married in 1948 and came to Vernon’s family home in Delaware, where Merle gave birth to their first son, Norman Eugene, on August 23, 1949. On September 10, 1952, daughter Karen Janine made her first appearance among the officers at Fort Meade in Maryland. Merle’s second son, Vernon Gerald, arrived on December 17, 1957, in Wilmington.
Merle retired from Delaware state employment in 1998. She loved animals, gardening and reading. She enjoyed watching Price Is Right, Jeopardy, and Wheel of Fortune, but spent much of her time shopping, dining out, and cavorting in Atlantic City with Karen.
Merle is so loved and missed.
Merle is survived by daughter, Karen of Bear; brother, Edwin Eugene Bannister of Schertz, TX; brother-in-law, Lawrence Hines of Dallas, TX; son, Gerry of Illinois; nieces and their husbands, Vicki Lynn and Darryl DeVault of Carrollton, TX, Elaine and Howard Bohlin of DeSoto, TX, and Mary Catherine and Clifton Watley of San Antonio, TX; grandchildren, Lance, Laura, and Joshua; and her best friends, Aneta Boulden and Delores Hearn.
Interment will be held privately in Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle, DE.
