Opal S. Arters
Opal S. Arters, age 91, formerly of New Castle, DE, went to the welcoming arms of her Savior on Thursday, July 15, 2010.
A native Delawarean, Opal was born in Wilmington on September 19, 1918, daughter of the late Deronda H. Shepherd, Sr. and Mary S. Spicer Shepherd. She was a 1938 graduate of Pierre S. DuPont High School and was employed with the Pennsylvania Railroad in the late 1930s. In May of 1941, she married her beloved husband, James H. Arters, Sr.
A devout Christian and member of the First Baptist Church of Holloway Terrace for nearly 50 years, Opal was a Child Evangelism Fellowship teacher in the 1960s and hosted the Good News Bible Club six days a week in her home. She served as the church secretary and Sunday School teacher for many years, as well as in many other capacities in service of the Lord. She also volunteered as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader in the early 1950s. Opal was truly the virtuous woman of Proverbs 31, whose price is far above rubies.
Her husband, James, died in 1999 after 58 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by a son, James H. Arters, Jr. in 1996, brother, Deronda H. Sheppard, Jr. in 2002, and sister, Catherine Brousseau in 2009. She is survived by her daughter, Constance V. Eyler, and husband, William, of Middletown, with whom she lived for the past nine years; granddaughter, Patricia Mitchem, great grandchildren, Victoria, Ashley, and Joshua Mitchem, and a great great grandson.
The family extends their sincere gratitude to the nurses and staff of Heartland Hospice and to Amber and Sherry Yeager for the special care given to Opal during her illness.
A life celebration will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, July 20, 2010, in the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, where visitation will begin at 1 pm. Interment will follow in the adjoining memorial park.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Opal may be made to Fairwinds Baptist Church, 801 Seymour Road, Bear, DE 19701.
