Mr. Phillip A. “Flip” Thayer, age 64, of St. Georges, DE, passed away on Tuesday, September 4, 2012, at Christiana Hospital surrounded by the comfort of his loving family.
Mr. Thayer was born on November 1, 1947 in Sewickley, PA. He spent much of his adult life in Delaware, where he taught for over thirty years in the vo-tech and academic fields, chiefly in the New Castle County public school system. He was an avid recreational pilot and thoroughly enjoyed flying his Piper airplane on the weekends. He also enjoyed camping with his sons, boating, and–as a lifelong car enthusiast–automotive restoration. Well known and admired for his keen intelligence, he was a longtime member of Mensa.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Macil Martin-Wolsky, father, Stephen C. Thayer, and brother, Arlen Thayer. He is survived by his wife, Barbara A. Markwood Thayer of St. Georges, DE; sons, Phillip “Flip” Thayer II and Michael Dillon Thayer, both of Bear, DE; sister, Sandra Thayer Moore of St. Georges, DE; stepmother, Marie Thayer of Wilmington, DE; stepsisters, Alberta Noronowicz and Louann Curlett, both of Wilmington, DE; brother-in-law, Charles H. Moore of Middletown, DE; stepdaughters, Kathy Denhup and Jackie Smoot and her husband Matt, all of Casanova, VA; four grandchildren and their spouses; eight great grandsons; and many loving nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, September 8, 2012, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where visitation will begin at 9:30 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Georges United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 145, St. Georges, DE 19733.
