Richard S. Elgart
Mr. Richard S. Elgart (Dick), age 86, of New Castle, DE, died on Friday, June 18, 2010, at Christiana Hospital.
Born in Nanticoke, PA, on August 9, 1923, Mr. Elgart was the son of the late Frank and Apolonia (Jankowski) Vlodowski. He proudly served his country during World War II in Pattons famed Third Army as a private first class in an anti-aircraft artillery unit. During his military career, he helped liberate trapped Allied forces during the Battle of the Bulge and served bravely in other European Theater offensives.
In civilian life, Mr. Elgart was employed as a letter carrier with the US Postal Service in the New Castle branch, where he retired after a 30-year career. Active in his community, he was a longtime member of Asbury U.M. Church and a Lifetime Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. A 32nd Degree Mason, he was also a member of St. Johns Lodge #2, AF & AM, in New Castle.
His beloved wife, Harriet V. (Knight) Elgart, died in 1987. He is survived by sons, Richard D. Elgart (Antoinette) of Manassas, VA, William E. Elgart (Kathleen) of New Castle, DE, and Thomas J. Elgart of Bear, DE; grandchildren, Carolyn Mundorf, Richard Elgart, Joseph Elgart, Justina Elgart, William Elgart, Jason Elgart, Thomas Elgart, and Jordan Elgart; and 8 great grandchildren.
Visitation will begin at 10 am on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 in the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, followed by a Masonic service at 10:45 am and a funeral service at 11 am. Interment will be in the adjoining memorial park.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Elgart may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church, 300 E. Basin Road, New Castle, DE 19720.
