Mr. Robert J. Thompson, Sr., age 68, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Thursday, August 30, 2012, at Christiana Hospital.
Mr. Thompson was a native Delawarean, born in Wilmington on May 27, 1944, son of the late Howard T. Thompson, Sr. and Ellen C. Tobin Thompson. He was a longtime member of UAW Local 435 and was employed with the General Motors Corporation, where he retired as a forklift operator after 32 years of service. Earlier, he had been employed with the Speakman Company.
A dedicated Fire Police Officer and Life Member of the Minquadale Fire Company, Mr. Thompson began his career in fire service in 1964. After serving with the fire police for 40 years and being elected to a term as president of the New Castle County Fire Police, he was honored by his fellow firefighters with the title of “Fire Police Emeritus.”
Mr. Thompson was active in the New Castle Moose Lodge and also faithfully participated in many programs at the Cornerstone Senior Center every Thursday morning. In his leisure hours, he enjoyed playing bingo with friends and watching his favorite WWE wrestlers. Most of all, he delighted in spending time with his beloved family and was always at his happiest during large, joyous family gatherings with his wife, sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren around him. He will be long and lovingly remembered as a wonderful father and role model for his sons.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Cheryl Kibler Thompson; sons, Michael E. Thompson, Sr. and wife Reagan of Smyrna, Robert J. “Joey” Thompson, Jr. and wife Kelly of New Castle, and Brian N. Thompson, Sr. and wife Kimberly of Newark; sisters, Patricia A. Thompson of Bear, and Marie E. Thompson of Minquadale; uncle, Edward C. Tobin of Wilmington; grandchildren, Mikey, Karley, Brian Jr., Caleb, Noah, and Hunter; and many nieces and nephews, including his special great niece and great nephew, Breanna and Austin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Mickey, and sister, Genie.
Visitation will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm on Wednesday, September 5th, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, and again from 9 am to 10 am on Thursday, September 6th, at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 am on Thursday at Holy Spirit R.C. Church, 12 Winder Road, Garfield Park, New Castle. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle.
