Rose Marie Barton, age 90, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 10, 2018, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Princeton, WV, on December 5, 1927, she was 1 of 9 children born to the late Opia C. and Vera G. Crotty. In her earlier years, Rose worked as a bookkeeper and at the theater where she met the love of her life, Dennis.

After she married, she delighted in being a stay at home mom. In 1959, she and her family moved to Delaware, where she and her husband enjoyed working on their home. Rose was creative and took pride in her projects of refinishing and reupholstering furniture. She also made clothing for the family and Colonial period clothing for the Bicentennial Celebration. Rose was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church, where in 1965 she and her sister Evelyn started a kindergarten. She was a caregiver to her mother, sisters and her husband. Rose will always be remembered as a giving and meticulous individual.

In addition to her parents, Rose was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Dennis Terry Barton, Sr.; brothers, Jack Crotty, Thomas Crotty and O.C. Crotty; and sisters, Eloise Myers, Dorothy Perry, Patricia Bowyer and Elizabeth Crotty. She is survived by her children, D. Terry Barton, Jr. (Jessica), J. Michael Barton (Carol C.), V. Catherine Barton, S. Elizabeth Duncan and D. Marie Scott (Ron); sister, Evelyn Fitzpatrick; 11 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren with a great granddaughter on the way; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Tuesday, October 16, 2018, at Calvary Baptist Church, 215 East Delaware Avenue, Newark, DE 19711, where a funeral service will begin at 11 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rose’s memory to Calvary Baptist Church at the address listed above.

  • My Thoughts and Prayers are with your Family at this time. I grew up in Pilgram Gardens. I also had the pleasure of working with Mr. Barton at the Sheraton Hotel. They were both wonderful people.
