Ruth Fisher Davis, age 78, of Wilmington, DE, formerly of Jefferson Farms in New Castle, DE, passed away on Friday, December 9, 2011.
A native Delawarean, Mrs. Davis was born in Wilmington on December 28, 1932, daughter of the late William Fisher and Naomi Hall Fisher. She began her career with the DuPont Company in the 1950s and would later earn her bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Delaware in 1972. As a professional librarian, she was employed with the Colonial School District for 15 years (and for a short time with Brandywine School District) until her retirement in 1996. While working full-time, she also earned her master’s degree in library science from UD in 1992.
A devout Christian throughout her life, Mrs. Davis began attending the New Castle United Methodist Church as a young girl before being confirmed as a member in 1943. She was also very active with the Pythian Sisters, joining William Penn Temple #5 in 1950 and serving several terms as the Grand Chief of the State of Delaware, the Supreme Representative, and the Secretary of the Past Chiefs Association. She was a longtime member of the AARP as well. In her leisure hours, she greatly enjoyed watching classic films, reading, and traveling with her family.
Her beloved husband, Millard F. “Inky” Davis, Jr., passed away in 1998. She is survived by her daughter, Susan D. Strumbeck (Rev. David); son, Glenn F. Davis (Faith); brother, William Fisher; sisters, Joan Preis, Nancy Stegall, and Kathylynn Holliday; grandchildren, Daniel Strumbeck (Gretchen), Megan Nairn (Andrew), and Alison Strumbeck; and three great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, December 13, 2011, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where visitation will begin at 5:30 pm. Interment will be held privately in Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle, DE.
