Ruth H. Travers

December 20, 1935 - February 19, 2024

Ruth H. Travers, age 88, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Monday, February 19, 2024.

Born in Philadelphia, PA on December 20, 1935, she was a daughter of the late Roy H. and Helen (Taylor) Andersen. Ruth made her career as a secretary at Colonial School District for 26 years until her retirement. She always said “She started at the original William Penn and retired at the new William Penn.”

Deep in her faith, Ruth was an active member of Asbury United Methodist Church, where she was the former lead chair of the Altar and Acolyte Guilds. Always one to help others, she was a former Girl Scout leader at the church as well as a member of the Pythian Sisters. In her spare time, Ruth enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable gardens or attending the Weston Senior Center.

In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Edward P. Travers, Jr.; sister, Charlotte Gebhart; son-in-law, J.R. Ritchie; and grandson, Brian Hahn. She is survived by her children, Pamela K. Grasso (John), Cynthia J. Hahn (Richard), Edwina R. Ritchie, and Phillip H. Travers, Sr. (Kim); grandchildren, J.J. Grasso (Julie), Christina Larson (Christopher), Alexina Mason (Chad), James Ritchie, Phillip H. Travers Jr., Matthew Johnson, Rachel Johnson, and Alexandrya Shank; great-grandchildren, Gracyn Grasso, Benjamin Larson, and Theodore Larson; sister-in-law, Catherine Travers; and honorary son-in-law, Charles N. Ritchie.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9:30 am until 11 am on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at Asbury United Methodist Church, 300 East Basin Road, New Castle, DE 19720, where a funeral service will begin at 11 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE.
