Samuel A. “Sam” Saienni, Jr.
September 20, 1950 - January 11, 2022
Samuel A. “Sam” Saienni, Jr., age 71, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Tuesday, January 11, 2022.
Born in Wilmington, DE, on September 20, 1950, he was a son of the late Samuel A. and Lucy (Cicconi) Saienni, Sr. Sam worked as a Master Carpenter for many years, and continued using his skills on home renovations, and teaching his grandchildren the trade. Sam could build anything and executed numerous projects until he was 69 years old! Sam loved to watch Scary Movies, MASH, and the Miami Dolphins. He had two stints in softball, the first one in the 1990’s with his former son in law, Stanley Tyre, and later in the 2011, when Sam was 61 years old he came out of “softball retirement” and pitched for 5 Seasons, playing with his grandsons Joey and P.J.; during that time he had two knee replacements and still showed up each season and pitched the ball, he was tough as nails. Sam absolutely loved spending time with his family; and especially his great grandchildren. Sam was loud and proud, he never had a problem expressing how he felt, and you could hear him from anywhere in the house. Sam was always full of energy, until his fall in May of 2020, Sam spent the last 19 months of his life in a wheelchair, and hated every minute of it, but he never stopped fighting. Sam Saienni was one of kind, with a big heart, and brain filled with random useful knowledge that he told you whether you wanted to hear it or not. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and anyone that knew him.
In addition to his parents, Sam was preceded in death by his siblings, Robert Saienni, Richard Saienni, Rita Buiano, and Joseph Saienni. He is survived by his wife, Carole A. Merchant; daughter, Sheila M. Saienni; brother, Frank Saienni (Mary); 5 grandchildren, Joseph Saienni (Brittany), PJ Saienni, Kelsey Tyre, Josh Reeves and Jewel Ross; and 10 great-grandchildren, Raul, Paisley, Gianna, Giovanni, Bentley, Ryder, Nova, Greyson, Maverick, and Remy.
A viewing for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 12 noon on Saturday, January 22, 2022, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. Face coverings will be required for all those in attendance regardless of their vaccination status. Interment will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Sam’s memory to Delaware SPCA, 455 Stanton Christiana Road, Newark, DE 19713 or online by clicking here.

Uncle Sammy….so many childhood memories. The loud voice, the big smile, the excitement, the never ending energy….but the heart…was bigger than he was. Sadly sometimes life happens and families distance….but he is and always will be in my heart. Love you, we lost another piece of our childhood. Stephanie.
