Taze H. Proffitt, Jr.
November 24, 1943 - February 7, 2023
Taze H. Proffitt, Jr., age 79, of Newark, DE, passed away on Tuesday, February 7, 2023.
Born in DeRidder, LA on November 24, 1943, he was a son of the late Taze H. and Beatrice (Stephens) Proffitt, Sr. He graduated from William Penn High School in 1961 and went on to play football and graduate from the University of Maryland. Taze worked as a driver’s education teacher for 37 years, primarily at Delcastle Technical High School.
Taze’s passion in life was sports, he spent countless hours cheering on his favorite teams, the Washington Redskins, LSU Tigers, and Philadelphia Phillies. He took great pride in coaching several high school football teams (Middletown & William Penn) and loved to spend time golfing or hunting. Taze also enjoyed animals, including breeding labrador retrievers and training them for field trial competitions. Most of all, he cherished his family and creating lasting memories with them. He found special joy in cheering on his three granddaughters in many sports while hardly ever missing a game. And most recently, he lit up with visits from his new great-granddaughter Sophia.
Taze was preceded in death by his parents, Taze and Beatrice Proffitt, Sr. He is survived by his children, Michael Proffitt and David Proffitt (Holly), both of Newark; brother, Ronald C. Proffitt (Linda) of Virginia; grandchildren, Alexa, Emily, and Madison; and great-grandchild, Sophia.
The family would like to thank Millcroft Nursing Home for their care, specifically the second-floor staff.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Monday, February 13, 2023, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 11 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE.

I lost track of Taze after high school, but I remember him as good teammate and great athlete. As I look at the team photo of our 1956 Manor Park little league team it brings back many fond memories of how as a new entry we exceeded expectations and became league Champions. Rest in Peace.
