Thomas E. Spittel, Sr.
October 8, 1944 - December 22, 2020
Thomas E. Spittel, Sr., age 76, of Newark, DE, passed away on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at Christiana Hospital, from COVID-19.
He was born on October 8, 1944 in Bear Creek Township, PA to the late George J. and Esther (nee Brown) Spittel.
Tom served in the Marine Corp Reserve for 6 years, where he achieved the rank of Sgt. He made his career at the DuPont Experimental Station where he worked for 36 years, retiring as a Facilities Specialist. Tom made a lot of friends while working there, including his wife.
In his younger days, he enjoyed riding his Harley, hunting, and crabbing with family and friends. Later, Tom loved fishing with his buddies, particularly in Rock Hall, MD and Smith Beach, VA. He was fortunate to have enjoyed long lasting friendships with these and other friends, while still making new ones.
In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his 7 brothers and sisters. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary; son, Thomas Jr. of Newark; daughter and son-in-law, Kerry and Jeffrey Mazer; and his grandson, Ryan of Smithville, NJ; as well as his loving extended family.
Tom’s family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and other staff members of Christiana Hospital for their compassion toward Tom and his family during this difficult time.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and Tom’s wishes, services will be private.

Mary, we were so sorry to read of Tom’s passing in The News Journal. He was such a nice guy. We regret we didn’t get a chance to get together when Tom called a few years ago. John and I have such great memories of the time when Tom, John and Joe Burg were in the Marine Corps together. Please know you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.
