Thomas R. Tarker
Mr. Thomas R. Tarker, age 57, of Newark, DE, passed away on Wednesday, June 27, 2012.
Born in Portsmouth, VA, on March 20, 1955, Tom was a 1973 graduate of Salesianum High School and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware in 1977. During his professional career he was employed the NVF Company in Yorklyn and later with the DuPont Company at its Red Lion site in Delaware City. Currently, Tom was following his passion for social justice and greatly enjoyed his work as a grant writer for the Ministry of Caring in Wilmington. While with NVF, he was also very active in the Red Clay Creek Clean Up initiative.
In his leisure hours, Tom delighted in cheering each season for his favorite Pittsburgh teams–the Steelers, the Penguins, and the Pirates. He was a talented, thoughtful writer, as well, and often surprised family and friends with treasured gifts of his beautiful poetry.
Tom was preceded in death by his mother, Bernadine Orzechowski Tarker. He is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years, Debra J. Cox Tarker; father, Matthew Tarker and fiancÃ©e Helene Doughty of Turnersville, NJ; brothers, Timothy Tarker and Donald Tarker, both of Salton City, CA; sisters, Lisa Tarker and husband Eliot Sternfeld of Bethesda, MD, and Mary Gallant and husband David of Doylestown, PA; goddaughters, Amy Hribar and Heather Clendening; many nieces and nephews; and his pet bunnies, Mocha, Midnight, and Buttons.
Visitation will be held from 5 pm to 7 pm on Friday, July 6, 2012, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 am on Saturday, July 7, 2012, at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, 801 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Tom may be made to the Ministry of Caring, 903 N. Madison Street, Wilmington, DE 19801-1497 (302/888-1420).
