Walter Synczyszyn

Walter Synczyszyn, age 91, of Newark, DE, and formerly of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 19, 2014.

Born in South Wilmington, Delaware on February 2, 1922, Mr. Synczyszyn was a son of the late Stephen Synczyszyn and Tillie Loboznka Synczyszyn. He enlisted with the US Navy on October 8, 1942, during WWII, and was assigned to the destroyer, the USS Hutchins, eventually earning 4 battle stars. He began his career with the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1941, where he worked as a machinist prior to and after his military service. Following his retirement from the railroad, he worked for General Motors as a stockperson and later for the Wilmington Parking Authority. Furthering his education was a priority to Mr. Synczyszyn, and even while working, he made time to take courses at Del Tech and the University of Delaware.

A kind and gentle man, he was exceptionally giving, especially to any one in need of assistance. Mr. Synczyszyn shared a close bond with his nieces and nephews, and was generous to each and every one of them. He will be remembered as a devoted and loving son, brother, uncle, and friend and will be dearly missed by all.

The family of Mr. Synczyszyn wishes to extend a special thank you to the entire staff of Churchman Village for the excellent care they have provided during his illness.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, John Synczyszyn, Michael Synczyszyn, Charles Synczyszyn, Stephen Synczyszyn, Jr., Ann Synczyszyn, Mary DeShong, Helen DuPuis, and Olga Santa Barbara. He is survived by 2 brothers, Peter Synczyszyn of New Castle, DE and Dimitry Synczyszyn of Merritt Island, FL; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 12:30 pm on Thursday, January 30, 2014, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where friends may call from 11:30 am until 12:30 pm. Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
