William Earl “Bill” Stevenson

September 20, 1947 - November 24, 2021

William Earl “Bill” Stevenson, age 74, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, November 24, 2021.

Born in Wilmington, DE, on September 20, 1947, he was a son of the late Earl and Magdaline C. (Dorsey) Stevenson. Bill was known by many names: Billy, Wilbur, Mr. Bill, Moonman, Linc, and Steve, and he answered to all of them by his many friends. He graduated from William Penn High School in 1965 and furthered his education by graduating from Delaware Technical Community College in 1972. Bill proudly enlisted and served honorably in the United States Air Force from 1965 to 1969. He also served as a life member of Holloway Terrace Volunteer Fire Company as treasurer for 32 years. Bill retired from ACME Markets after 25 years of dutiful service. He also retired from New Castle County Government, also after 25 years, where he served as treasury supervisor.

Bill was an avid gardener. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren waited anxiously to see who was chosen to pick the first cucumber, tomato or pepper, Pop’s top honor! Bill also planted many flowers to beautify his home.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his brother, John L. and grandson, Brenden Ian. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Donna J. (Schmitt) Stevenson; children, Robert Stevenson and Brandi Patterson (Ben); grandchildren, Lauren Stevenson (James), Joshua Patterson, and Mallori Stevenson; great-grandchildren, Everett Tyre, Jameson Stevenson, Harrison Walls; and a great-granddaughter due in March; brother, Jack Stevenson; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Season’s Hospice at Christiana Hospital for all of their loving care and support.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 pm until 8 pm on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 am on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at the funeral home. Face coverings will be required for all those in attendance not immunized with the COVID-19 vaccine per the Governor of Delaware. Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Bill’s memory to Holloway Terrace Fire Company, 700 West Avenue, P.O. Box 684, New Castle, DE 19720.
