William H. Appleton, Sr.
Mr. William H. Appleton, Sr., 87, of Rockville, MD, formerly of New Castle, DE, passed away Sunday, March 13, 2011.
Born in Wilmington, DE, January 26, 1924, son of the late Joseph M. Appleton and Margaret Burris Appleton, Mr. Appleton was a graduate of P.S. DuPont High School and attended the University of Kentucky under the U.S. Armys Army Specialized Training Program. He went on to proudly serve his country during WW II, spending most of his tour in Germany. He then returned to New Castle taking ownership of The Manor Cab Co. during the late 1950s. He then moved his family to Bethesda, MD, to work for The National Bureau of Standards (now the National Institute of Standards and Technology), where he worked for 20 years as an Electronic Technician. He then worked for the TRW Defense & Space System Group as a Test and Development Specialist, where he conceived, designed, constructed, and repaired various technical systems and instruments.
He enjoyed cars, classical music, studying German, photography, gardening, crossword puzzles and studying the Bible. He also loved animals, especially his beloved Quaker parrot, Alphie.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Leilla Jane Broadbent Appleton, in 2003, and his beloved sister, Jean Appleton Schneider, in 2008. He is survived by his children, Andrea Appleton of Olney, MD, and William H. Appleton, Jr. of Poolesville, MD; stepdaughters, Catherine Dillon of Newark, DE, and Marlene Stover of Wheaton, MD; and grandchildren, Daniel Houghtaling, William H. Appleton III, Mariah Appleton, Jesse Lee Appleton, Karen Koyne, John Koyne and Kristin Koyne Joyce.
Visitation will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm on Thursday, March 17th, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Friday, March 18th, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Silverbrook Cemetery, Lancaster Ave. and DuPont Rd., Wilmington, DE.
