Charles L. Stewart, Sr.

August 29, 1939 - June 19, 2018

Charles L. Stewart, Sr., age 80, of Newark, DE, passed away at his residence on Monday, June 18, 2018.

Born in Marshallton, DE on August 29, 1937, he was a son of the late Edward and Anna (Blunt) Stewart. Charles proudly served in the U.S. Army Special Forces Team for several years. Following his service, he worked for Gulf Oil for almost 10 years. Charles was also the proud owner and operator of a heating and air conditioning business in Georgetown, DE. Upon moving to Newark, Charles worked as a shop manager for Tim O’Connell & Sons for 14 years before becoming an electrician with New Castle County and retiring in 2003.

Charles loved being with his church family and enjoyed being part of the Board of Trustees for Kingswood United Methodist Church. But spending time with his granddaughter, Carissa, was his favorite thing to do.

In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his sisters, Alice Pleasanton and Jean Palmatary; and brothers, Edward and Howard Stewart.  He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy, of 46 years; his children, Charles L. Stewart, Sr. of Lewes, DE, Cynthia A. Crane (David) of  Henderson, NC, Jeffrey A. Depfer of Coronado, CA and Cheryl L. Waldon (Rusti) of Harrington, DE; eight grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings: James Stewart (Jane) of Middletown, DE, Carol Riggs of Elkton, MD, Barbara Concord (John) of Newark, DE and Robert Stewart (Lois) also of Newark.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9 am until 10 am on Saturday, June 23, 2018, at Kingswood United Methodist Church, 300 Marrows Rd, Newark, DE 19713, where a funeral service will begin at 10 am.  Interment will be held thereafter at Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Charles’ name to Kingswood United Methodist Church at the address listed above.
