Donald G. Varnes, age 88, of Newark, DE, passed away on Friday, September 14, after a long illness.

Born on January 18, 1930, in Mifflintown, PA, Donald was the son of the late Glen and Rebecca Varnes. He moved to Delaware in 1955 with his family, built his own home, and started his own business in 1958: Donald G. Varnes, Hardwood Floors, later becoming Donald G. Varnes and Sons, Inc., Hardwood Floors.

After retiring in 1995, Donald enjoyed spending time with his extensive family, fishing, and reading.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Dorothy Romaine; his four sons, Garry (Joanne), Steve (Valerie), Edward, Allen (Tracy) and daughter Janet Sanders (Stan) along with 20 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sisters, Jane White of PA and Shirley Kerr (John) of NC. He was predeceased by his brothers Ted, Roland and sister, Dorothy Leister.

Donald was a long-time member of the White Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, 15 Polly Drummond Hill Road, Newark, DE 19711. Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of his Life at the church on Thursday, September 20, with visitation from 10:30 to 11:30 with a funeral service to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Donald’s name to the White Clay Creek Presbyterian Church at the address listed above.
