Donna Cox

January 27, 1951-July 13, 2016

Donna Cox passed away peacefully at her home in Newark, Delaware on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 after a long battle with cancer.

Born in Cumberland, Maryland, Donna was a graduate of Northern Garrett High School. She received her nursing degree from the University of Maryland where she met her future husband Tom, who was finishing dental school. Donna applied her nursing degree in various specialties including intensive care at the University of Maryland, dialysis nursing at Christiana Hospital, private duty pediatric nursing, and as a school nurse for The Independence School.

While working as a private duty nurse, Donna was also the co-founder of her own sweatshirt business, Classics by Fradon. Donna enjoyed spending time at their Deep Creek Lake house in Maryland. Watching her children and grandchildren grow up was a special part of her life. Donna’s other hobbies included watching college sports, interior decorating, and finding a good deal! She was also a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church in Hockessin, Delaware. Donna will forever be remembered for her strength, resilience, and compassion for others.

Donna was preceded in death by her father, Earl Haenftling, mother Mildred Haenftling, and husband of 39 years, Thomas Cox. She is survived by her two daughters, Erin Cox O’Leary (Dennis) and Laura Harris (David); her grandchildren Emersyn and Logan O’Leary and Charlotte Harris; and her sister Carol Ann Wildesen (John).

The family would like to thank the staff of Vitas Hospice Care and all of the terrific friends and family who provided support with a meal, a hug, a note, or a visit.

A memorial service for Donna Cox will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at Deerfield Country Club, 507 Thompson Station Rd., Newark, where visitation will begin at 10 AM.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 2033 Graves Rd., Hockessin, Delaware, 19707, or the Emmanuel Dining Room, 121 N. Jackson St., Wilmington, DE 19805.

Donna was one of the strongest people I’ve ever known. She was a dedicated nurse and loved her family more than anyone could know. She fought so hard and had such a positive attitude because of that love. I know she is happy and at peace now with her husband and family. Erin, Laura and families, you are in my prayers. Sending you love and support.

We will miss our friend Donna. She was such an inspiration to us. She was strong, courageous, kind, and generous. She loved her family deeply. Her friendship was very important to us, we lost a bright light in our life with her passing. Heaven will be waiting for her with open arms and a McDonalds tea, lots of ice and extra lemon! Miss you our friend 🙁

Dear Dr, Erin and family (including the office staff) — I know that this has been such a trying time for you these last few years. You are so very strong. I think that is mainly because of love — the love of an all encompassing family. Your dad and mother displayed love — to each other and I am certain to all they met. I did not know your mother, but, I knew your dad — and even when we met him in public, he was always cheerful and radiated love. You radiate love. Please accept our sincerest condolences for the loss of your mother. May God hold you and your family in the palms of His hands and help you heal. May your mother finally rest in peace.

I am sorry for your loss. The Bible promises that very soon we will no longer have to suffer the pain of loss. We can enjoy a world free of all suffering and pain (Revelation 21:4). We are also promised that one day we will see our loved ones again (Acts 24:15). May you find comfort in the beautiful promises of our loving heavenly Father.

    To Donna’s dear family,
Donna was my childhood friend in Sunday School and 4-H, always kind to all of us. I truly miss her joining us at Zion when she vacationed at the lake. She always had a beautiful smile and genuine caring for everyone. You are in my prayers for God’s comfort.
