Joanne S. Varell, age 79, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, February 19, 2016.

Born in Wilmington, DE on September 23, 1936, Joanne was a daughter of the late James R. Shaw, Sr. and Sadie H. (Sharp) Shaw. She worked as a cashier at the Pike Creek Wawa, retiring after 15 years of dedicated service.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert D. Varell, Sr.; sisters, Doris L. Atkins, Dawn E. Pragg, and Shirley Duffy; brothers, John Bob Shaw, Donald Shaw, Sr., and James Shaw.

Joanne is survived by her daughters, Sharon R. Murphy of Newark, DE, Deborah A. Varell of Newark, DE; son, Robert D. Varell, Jr. (Geri) of New Castle, DE; sisters, Betty F. Dudley of Wilmington, DE, Jeanne Ratcliff; twin brother, Charles W. Shaw of Middletown, DE; grandchildren, Tracy Curry, John Murphy, Ashley Maurer, Blaine Varell, Britney Toy, Casey Varell, Elizabeth Wright, Robert Clemons, and Scott Clemons; and 13 great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, February 26, 2016, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a visitation will be held from 10:00 am until 11:00 am. Interment will be held in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.

  • my thoughts and prayers go out to the family of joanne. i have many fond memories of our kids playing together at iron hill apts and all of our “girl talks”. rip my friend.

    It doesnt seem like 3 years but it is. I miss you each and every day. I talk to you everyday but it is not the same as seeing you here.
