Mary Ellen (Bennett) Curlett, age 91, of Smyrna, DE and formerly of Delaware City, DE, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 6, 2015.
A native Delawarean, Mary Ellen was born in Delaware City on September 3, 1923, one of seven children of the late George Bennett and Lula Mae Jess Bennett.
Along with her siblings, she was raised on the family farm where she learned the values of hard work and cooperation. Mary Ellen was a devoted and caring wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother. She faced many hardships in life due to her physical disability, but tackled them with the determination to succeed. She was the valedictorian of her graduating high school class and would later meet and marry her husband, Wilbur. In her leisure time, Mary Ellen enjoyed knitting, crocheting and sewing.
In addition to her parents, Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Edmond Curlett and 5 siblings. She is survived by her children, Judith E. Johnson (Charles) of Bear, Lawrence E. Curlett (Susan) of St. Georges and Robert B. Curlett (Kathleen) of Smyrna; brother, Joseph Bennett of Delaware City; 5 grandchildren, Terri (Johnson) Skorak, Susan (Johnson) Swan, Christopher Curlett, Gregory Curlett and Lauren Curlett; and 3 great grandchildren, Brian, Megan and Kaitlin.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday morning, January 13, 2015, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 214 Clinton Street, Delaware City, DE, where a visitation for family and friends will be held from 9 am until 11 am. Interment will follow in New St. Paul’s Cemetery, Delaware City.
