Kenneth Michael Poczynek

April 17, 1959 - January 5, 2024

Kenneth Michael Poczynek, known to loved ones and friends as Ken, of Elkton, MD, sadly passed away on Friday, January 5, 2024, at the age of 64.

Born in Wilmington, DE on April 17, 1959, he was the son of the late Michael V. and Joyce (Leathem) Poczynek. A valedictorian graduate of William Penn High School, Ken went on to become a blue hen at the University of Delaware and achieve a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering. Ken would continue to support and raise his family in Pittsburgh, working as a mechanical engineer for Westinghouse/Bechtel, retiring in 2017. Ken then moved to Elkton, MD in 2019, where he worked part time in nearby bowling alleys Elk and Pleasant Hill lanes, just as he grew up doing.

Ken was known for his joyful personality and active lifestyle, with some of his favorite hobbies including bowling, softball, and fishing. He also enjoyed spending time with his six grandsons and his loving wife at the beach. Ken was involved in numerous leagues over the years, cherishing any opportunities to participate in his hobbies with his family and friends.

Ken is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Diana Rita (Balbach) Poczynek; children, Melanie Ward, Jake Poczynek (Amy), and Monica Poczynek (Nick); sister, Patti McDonald; and grandsons, Aaron, Matthew, Austin, Rhys, Michael, and Ace.

A private service will be held for family members, and a celebration of life party will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers and shared memories, the family asks that donations be made to the funeral home to offset funeral expenses.

  • My heart goes out to the families!
Kenny was my next door neighbor growing up. We had great times together in the neighborhood. We would all get together and play baseball in his and Patti’s yard. Swim in there pool and go bowling at times on the weekends. So many great memories were made in our neighborhood in Kenny’s yard.
As life moved on , many times while going through Pittsburgh I would think of Kenny and Diane not knowing where they lived. Ken was a great friend to us all and his memories will last in our minds forever. Thanks buddy for the great ride that we all had together. 🙏🎳⚾️🏈
