William “Bill” J. Maxwell, Sr.

April 6, 1944 - February 15, 2024

William “Bill” J. Maxwell, Sr., age 79, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Thursday, February 15th, 2024.

​Born in Honolulu, HI on April 6, 1944, he was a son of the late Harry C. and Ida (Ledo) Maxwell, Sr. Bill dedicated his life to his family, as well as Emergency Services.

He served for six years in the United States Navy aboard the USS Prairie during the Vietnam War.  Bill retired from the New Castle County Division of Emergency Medical Services after 30 years of service as a Paramedic.  In addition, he was also a dedicated life member of the Holloway Terrace Fire Company, where he held many offices and eventually was named a Chief Emeritus.

​In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. Maxwell. He is survived by his sons, William (Nicole), Harry, Michael (Tina), and Robert (Susan); eleven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; brother, Paul (Jane); sister, Marie (Mike); and girlfriend, Jeanne Morgan.

​A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Monday, February 26, at Holloway Terrace Fire Company, 700 West Avenue, New Castle, DE 19720, where a funeral service will begin at 11 am. Interment will be held privately for family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill’s memory to the Holloway Terrace Fire Company at the address above.

  • My sincere condolences. Bill was very helpful to many in the fire & EMS, including myself. I learned alot from him in many ambulance runs over the years. He was truly one of the good guys & will be missed.

  • So sorry for your great loss. Bill was my first paramedic partner after we completed medic school. We had the very first documented cardiac save of the program. That means the first prehospital paramedic save in the state. He was a great partner to work with and a man who cared about family. He was always dedicated to Station 20. He will be missed in so many ways.
