Joan M. “Joanie” Mayer, age 83, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 18, 2024.

Born in Wilmington, DE, on July 6, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Doris (Taylor) Wolhar. Joanie made her career as an administrative assistant at Avon Products until her retirement.

Joanie enjoyed playing the piano and organ in her spare time. When she was ready to get away, she loved visiting Bethany Beach. Above all, Joanie cherished time spent with her family, especially Sunday dinners.

In addition to her parents, Joanie was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald P. Mayer; and brother, Richard Wolhar. She is survived by her children, Lisa Mayer Capiro, Adam C. Mayer (Amy), and Vincent P. Mayer; 6 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will begin at 11 am on Monday, April 29, 2024, at Holy Angels R.C. Church, 82 Possum Park Road, Newark, DE 19711. Inurnment will be held privately.

  • So sorry to hear of Joanie’s passing. I worked with her at Avon. She was such a sweet, caring person – loved all the jewelry she wore! She was truly one of a kind and I’m lucky to have known her. I remember seeing her occasionally at Kohl’s after she retired. Also remember the Town Car(s) she drove! May your memories and all the lives she touched help you through this difficult time.

  • Just saw this about Joanie and Read about family, Please know we are so sad to hear of Jonie s & Ronnie s passing. Ronnie & my dad Tony Herlehy both had a love for boats and fishing. We would all go out esp. down from Indian River. Both of them were such good friends all my life growing up. About 6 yrs ago I had a yard sale & your dad Ronny came not knowing it was my house. Mom who is 97 presently , and I kept saying he looks familiar when we all discovered who every was. It was nice to see him. So sorry about both your parents but they will never be forgotten.♥️♥️ KHD
