Mr. Aaron L. LaFon, age 80, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 11, 2011, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in White Sulphur Springs, WV, on September 12, 1930, Mr. LaFon was the son of the late Porter A. LaFon and Nellie K. Beckner LaFon. He proudly served his country in the US Air Force during the Korean War, and, in civilian life, made his career as a teacher and school administrator with the Colonial School District for 30 years until his retirement in 1984. He later accepted a position as the head of security at the former Hercules Research Center, where he worked for 25 years until retiring from that position in 2009.
Active in his community, Mr. LaFon was a longtime member of New Castle U.M. Church. He was also an avid Blue Hen football fan and was honored to have been named “Fan of the Week” on the 50th anniversary of the UD stadium. His hobbies included fishing, bowling, and umpiring at local softball games.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years, Joyce Ann Goodman LaFon, in 2003. He is survived by his children, LeeAnn Cappiello (John) of Avondale, PA, Russell L. LaFon, Sr. (Julie) of Townsend, DE, and Michelle Y. LaFon-Howett (Butch) of New Castle, DE; brothers, David A. LaFon of Wilmington, DE, and Daniel S. LaFon of Westminster, MD; brother-in-law, Bill Mack Goodman (Wanda) of Bluefield, VA; sister-in-law, Anita Farmer of Montcalm, WV; grandchildren, Nicolette Montgomery, Brooke LaFon, R. Lane LaFon, Jr., Aaron D. Curtis, and Elizabeth Howett; great grandson, J.R. Montgomery; a multitude of good friends; and his puppies, Scottie and Gracie.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Christiana Hospital for their compassionate care and attention to Mr. LaFon and family during his illness.
Visitation will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm on Thursday, September 15, 2011, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Friday, September 16, 2011, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.
