Agnes Carrigan Ulrich
August 7, 1929 - February 7, 2016
Agnes Carrigan Ulrich, age 86, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, February 7, 2016.
Born in Mooresville, NC on August 7, 1929, Mrs. Ulrich was the daughter of the late Bruce Reid and Elizabeth (Linker) Carrigan. She was a talented homemaker who devoted her life to caring for her family.
A devout Christian throughout her life, Mrs. Ulrich was a charter member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Newark where she played both the organ and piano and participated in the women’s circle and church choir. She was a faithful volunteer at the Methodist Country House for over 30 years oftentimes would bring her grandchildren with her. Mrs. Ulrich was deeply involved in the community effort to feed the hungry and gave of her time as a volunteer with the Hope Dining Room for many years.
She greatly enjoyed traveling and especially looked forward to beach vacations with her husband and family. Mrs. Ulrich was a loyal fan of the University of Delaware Blue Hens. She will be long remembered for her supportive, positive and sunny disposition.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Ulrich was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Francis Boyd Ulrich. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Reid Ulrich (William Hutchins) of Newark, DE; son, James Boyd Ulrich (Susan) of Newark, DE; sister, Betty Alexander; brother, Wade Carrigan; grandchildren, Melissa Marrocco (Blake) of Phoenix, MD, Elizabeth Martin (Matthew) of Middletown, DE and Tyler Ulrich of Elkton, MD; great grandchildren, Landon, Brendan and Colin Marrocco and Grayson Martin; step grandchildren, Ryan Cowgill (Becky) and Katie Cowgill; and step great grandchildren, Layla, Willow and Otto Cowgill.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Thursday morning, February 11, 2016, at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 200 Marrows Road, Newark, DE 19713, where a visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am. Interment will follow in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church at the address listed above.

Not only were Boyd and Agnes pillars at St. Andrews, they and Nancy and Jimmy were part of our young family during growing up years in Fireside Park. Agnes visited when one of us was ill. Nancy baby-sat for us. Jimmy cut our lawn when we were away. Boyd helped us with advice over many years. I sang during service at St. Andrews one Sunday accompanied by Agnes…”Blood of Christ.”
So the Miller family: John, Fran (passed in 2006), son Dave now in Elkton and Susan Jane in Newark do acknowledge the loss of Agnes with respect and love, and we reach out to Nancy and Jimmy with a warm embrace.

Although our lives only briefly crossed, I was very grateful to have met Ms. Agnes and her wonderful family. As I am not the best with words, I looked for an Irish blessing to pass along, but when I saw this poem, it really seemed to be a perfect fit:
