Alberta Leona DiVirgilio

Alberta Leona DiVirgilio, age 92, of Middletown, DE, passed away surrounded by her family on Friday, October 21, 2016.
Born in Clifton Heights, PA, on August 5, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Bertha (Weeks) Edwards. Alberta served her country in the Women’s Army Corps during WWII as a surgical technician. She then attended and graduated nursing school at Methodist Hospital and later served in the Air Force Nurse Corps Reserves as 2nd Lieutenant during the Korean War. Following her discharge, Alberta worked for Community Nursing Service of Chester, PA. She married the love of her life, Charles J. DiVirgilio, and together they were foster parents during the 1950’s and 1960’s. Alberta worked as an office nurse for Dr. Thomas C. Scott and proudly graduated from West Chester University in 1971 and attended the University of Delaware graduate program.
Devoted to her faith, Alberta was an elder for 35 years, where she sang in the choir, and was treasurer for many years at First Presbyterian Church of Port Penn. She was a member since 1981 and secretary for many years for the Port Penn Area Historical Society and a member of the Delaware Retired School Personnel Association. Alberta retired from the Delaware State Education Association and was the school nurse at William Penn High School, retiring in 1986.
Alberta was preceded in death by her husband, Charles J. DiVirgilio, who passed way in 1980 and her sister, Hanna Mary Marshall. She is survived by her son, Stephen C. DiVirgilio (Tracy); brother, Walter W. Edwards; and two grandchildren, Cecily and Stephen.
A graveside service will be held on Friday afternoon, October 28, 2016 at 3 pm in Hickory Grove Cemetery, Port Penn Road, Port Penn, DE.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Alberta’s memory may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Port Penn, PO Box 177, Port Penn, DE 19731.
