Arthur Frederick (Art) Knapp

February 21, 1925 - January 7, 2020

           Arthur Frederick (Art) Knapp, age 94, of Newark, Delaware passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Tuesday, January 7, 2020.

          Born in Dolgeville, NY on February 21, 1925, he was the son of the late Wheeler Knapp, Jr. and Edith (Davis) Knapp.  After graduating from Dolgeville High School in 1942, he attended the N.Y.S. Aviation School in Utica, NY until being drafted.  During WWII, Art served in the Army Air Force in England, repairing battle-damaged B-17 and B-24 bombers.  After being discharged from the military, Art attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1951.  While there he met his future wife, Marilyn Curtin. He was also a member and treasurer of the Phi Mu Delta fraternity.  Arthur began his career working for American Locomotive Company in Dunkirk, NY where his 3 children were born.  He came to Delaware with his family in 1963 to accept a job in the DuPont Engineering Department at Louviers, retiring after 28 years in 1991.  Art was an avid gardener who acquired his love of gardening from summers spent on his aunt and uncle’s farm. He also enjoyed photography, wood-working and was a devoted family man.

          In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Marilyn (Curtin) Knapp; and sisters, Norma Knapp and Florence Schrader.  Arthur is survived by his children, Karen A. Cavall of Newark, David A. Knapp and his wife, Marlene of Richmond, VA and Jeffrey P. Knapp of Wilmington; granddaughter, Angèle E. Knapp of Rockville, MD; and nephew, Larry Schrader of Punte Gorda, FL.

          A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Friday, February 28, 2020, at First Presbyterian Church, 292 West Main Street, Newark, DE.  Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE.

          In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Delaware Hospice, 16 Polly Drummond Center, 2nd Floor, Newark, DE 19711.

  • It was an honor to have known Mr. Knapp. For many years he inspired and taught me all about gardening. There are many plants in our yard to remember him by. He was the kindest person and i shall remember him fondly.
