Betty Ford Burge

May 10, 1923 - August 19, 2021

On August 19, 2021, Betty Ford Burge, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away peacefully at home. She was 98 years old.

Betty was born on May 10, 1923 near Cooch’s Bridge to the late James Leslie and Florence D. Ford. Betty was a 1941 graduate of Newark High School and went on to attend Goldey Beacom College. She worked for the DuPont Company and later worked for the State of Delaware, New Castle Motor Vehicles Lanes where she retired after 18 years. She was an active member of the Christiana Methodist Church and its senior group. She was also a lifetime member of the Christiana Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary serving 61 years. She held many offices with the Christiana Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary as well as the New Castle County Ladies Auxiliary where she was the secretary for two years. She was also Chaplain of the Christiana Ladies Auxiliary, and in 2017 she was honored as Chaplain Emeritus. This was quite an honor bestowed on her.

Betty enjoyed her yearly trips to the beach with the family. She enjoyed sitting on the beach and watching all the other beachgoers. She also enjoyed sitting on the Rehoboth Boardwalk and watching everyone walking by or listening to the music at the bandstand. Sometimes she would stay home and watch the Phillies ball game with Paul. She just loved to have her family and friends around her.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband of over 72 years, Paul Burge; son, Ronald Burge; and sisters, Marie Ford and Florence Moore. Betty is survived by her son, P. Wayne Burge (Jeanne); grandchildren, P. Todd Burge, Stacie Cook (TJ), Whitney Burge, Courtney Burge, Jason Burge and Andrew Burge; four great grandchildren; and brother, James L. Ford, Jr. (Elaine). She was also a second mother and grandmother to Chuck, Karen and Dani Subda. Betty is also survived by a host of nephews, nieces and friends.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 pm until 8 pm on Monday, August 30, 2021 at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. A second visitation will be held from 11:30 am until 12:30 pm on Tuesday, August 31, 2021 at the funeral home, where a funeral service will begin at 12:30 pm. Face coverings will be required for all those in attendance not immunized with the COVID-19 vaccine per the Governor of Delaware. Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty’s memory to the Christiana Fire Company, Attn: Treasurer, 2 East Main Street, Christiana, DE 19702.

  • Betty was an angel on earth. It is very sad to read of her passing. She went to school with my mom and was always such a sweet, kind, friendly and loving person. She was a mentor to many at the Ladies Auxiliary of Christiana Fire Company, including myself. She will be greatly missed but reunited with Paul, her son and many other family members. May she rest in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
