Bruce W. Benson

June 26, 1954 - June 15, 2021

Bruce W. Benson, age 66, of Bear, DE, passed away on Tuesday, June 15, 2021.

Born in Wilmington, DE on June 26, 1954, he was a son of the late Paul P. and Pauline L. (Wertz) Benson. Bruce worked at Greggo & Ferrara for over 30 years; retiring as a Superintendent in April 2019. He loved the outdoors, deer hunting, fishing, and horseshoes. Bruce was an avid softball player for over 20 years with Vagabond, William Penn Inn, St. Anthony’s Club in New Castle, and various other teams. After hanging up his softball spikes, inspired by his youngest son, Bruce picked up a golf club and never looked back. This passion led to him being able to play rounds of golf in South Carolina, Georgia, Arizona, and Hawaii.  Bruce enjoyed making up his own words and keeping friends and family on their toes trying to guess their meaning. Later in life, he developed a passion for gardening and loved flowers of all types. Bruce enjoyed cars and spent years restoring a vintage Barracuda.  One of his best memories was getting to experience riding at high speeds in a top fuel dragster.  As those who were closest to Bruce knew, he always had your back.

In addition to his parents, Bruce was preceded in death by his siblings, Robert Benson and Sandra Benson; and parents-in-law, Joseph and Marion (Gallagher) Leonard. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Diane F. Benson; children, Jennifer Handlin (Mike), Jonathan (Amy) and Bruce (Stacey); grandchildren, Kelly and Logan Handlin and Katie Orsetti; brother, Paul Benson; sisters-in-law, Marion Gallagher and Janice Marris; brothers-in-law, Jim Gallagher (Jean) and Jack Gallagher (Carol); 4 nieces; 2 nephews; 1 great niece; 2 great nephews; 5 grand pups; 7 grand cats; 1 grand ferret; and 7 grand snails.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 22, 2021, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 23, 2021, at St. Peter the Apostle R.C. Church, 521 Harmony Street, New Castle, DE. Interment will follow in St. Peter the Apostle Church Cemetery, at the address listed above.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bruce’s memory to the National PKU Alliance, 2809 E. Hamilton Ave #311, Eau Claire, WI 54701 or online by clicking here, or the First Tee, PO Box 419, Rockland, DE 19732 or online by clicking here.
