Born October 24, 1938

C. Merrill Yocum, age 75, of Newark, DE passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family, on Sunday, December 29, 2013.

Born in Norristown, PA on October 24, 1938, Merrill was a son of the late Clarence R. Yocum and Grace Radar Yocum. He was a 1956 graduate of Collegeville-Trappe High School. Merrill served his country in the US Army and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sgt (T). He made his career as a service representative with LabCorp, retiring August 30, 2013.

Active in the Little League community, Merrill served as the President of the Newark American Little League for 8 years. He was a member of the Delaware Umpire Association and volunteered as a youth baseball umpire for 20 years. Merrill was proud to have umpired in both the Junior Little League World Series in Michigan and the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed cheering on the Phillies and Eagles each season. Merrill was a longtime member of the American Legion Stahl Post No. 30 in New Castle, DE.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Yocum. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Mary H. Yocum; children, William Yocum and wife Wendy of Middletown, DE and Scott Yocum of Newark, DE; brothers, Harold Yocum of Monroe, LA and Frank Yocum of Collegeville, PA; 2 grandchildren, Heather and Matthew Yocum; 1 great grandchild, Riley; and many special nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may call from 6 pm until 8 pm on Sunday evening, January 5, 2014 and again from 11:30 am until 12:30 pm on Monday, January 6, 2014 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE. A funeral service will be held at 12:30 pm on Monday afternoon, January 6, 2014 at the funeral home. Interment will follow in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to Delaware Hospice, 16 Polly Drummond Center, 2nd Floor, Newark, DE 19711.

  • To Merrill family, Sorry to read of Merrill’s passing. We met Merrill through Baseball, my husband use to umpire with Merrill on many occassion. They had a lots of fun together with the other umpires. I use to talk to Merrill when they got done umpiring, I always enjoyed his converstions. Merill is now umprining up above and will keep the game going for the little leagers that he enjoyed so much. We will not be able to make services as we are snowed in the Midwest. Please know that we will be praying for you and your family in the time of your need. RIP Merrill, keep those strikes going.
