Charles Herman Peters
May 5, 1945 - February 12, 2026
Charles Herman Peters, known to most as Charlie, passed away peacefully at Commonwealth Assisted Living in Salisbury, Maryland on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at the age of 80.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on May 5, 1945, he was a son of the late August and Theresa Peters. Born and raised in the Highlandtown neighborhood of Baltimore, Charles attended Patterson High School where he played lacrosse. He attended the University of Maryland, College Park where he graduated in January of 1968 with a chemical engineering degree. He and Marcy married in February and moved to Charles Town, WV for his first engineering job at Union Carbide. They relocated to Tarrytown, NY in 1972 where he worked for Dow Chemical. In 1974, they moved to Newark, DE where Charles would then work for over 35 years at Getty/Texaco/Star Enterprise refinery in Delaware City. He earned his MBA from University of Delaware in 1979. In 2013, they retired to Conway, SC. Charles returned to the Newark area in 2016 after his wife’s death, later moving to Salisbury, MD in 2019 to be closer to his sister.
Charles was an intelligent and quiet guy with a Bob Newhart-like witty, dry humor. A true sports enthusiast, he was an avid fan of the Baltimore Colts/Ravens, Orioles, and a lifelong Maryland Terps fan, especially following men’s lacrosse and basketball. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing tennis, shooting hoops, soccer, birdwatching, and home repair projects. He also loved classic rock music, going to concerts, and traveling. While many vacations involved beach trips to Ocean City, MD, Bradenton, FL, and Myrtle Beach, SC, they also travelled to the Caribbean, Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, and Germany/Austria. He cherished spending time with family and friends, eating Maryland steamed crabs while shooting the breeze. He later became a wine connoisseur, although being of German heritage, he was really a “brat & brew” guy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Christopher Peters in 2011; and wife, Marcella (nee Beck) Peters in 2016. He is survived by his loving sister, Mary DiBartolo, her husband Gerry DiBartolo; their two sons, Dominic and Anthony of Salisbury, MD, and Robert Peters of Nokomis, FL; and cousin, Don Sanders and wife Valerie of Jarrettsville, MD.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 4 pm until 5 pm on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a celebration of life will begin at 5 pm. Inurnment will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to your favorite charity or sing your favorite classic rock song in his memory.
