Charles V. Yenkevich “Charlie Tuna”, age 88, of Newark, DE passed away on Sunday, February 10, 2013.
Born in West Hazleton, PA on September 12, 1924, Charlie was the son of the late Joseph Yenkevich and the late Tillie Varnagaitis Yenkevich. He proudly served his country in the US Army during both World War II and the Korean Conflict. Charlie later joined the UAW Local #1183 and enjoyed a 30 year career in the maintenance division at the Chrysler assembly plant in Newark until his retirement in 1983.
A devout Catholic, he was a member of Holy Family Parish. Previously, Charlie had served as an usher for 12 years at St. John the Baptist Church. He was a charter member of the St. Michael’s Council #4548, Knights of Columbus, and was a longtime member of the Delaware Saengerbund. Known fondly by family and friends as “Charlie Tuna” and “Chicken Foot”, he enjoyed playing dominos at Marydale and pinochle at the Newark Senior Center. He was also a talented gardener and designed beautiful landscaping around his home.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Anne M. Spire Yenkevich; brothers, Edward, Saggie, George, Joseph, Jr., Michael, Gus, and Algert “Al” Yenkevich; and sisters, Evelyn Yencho, Tillie Roszkowski, Ruth Lucas, and Eleanor Mockaitis. Charlie is survived by his daughter, Joanne Yenkevich; brothers, Father Daniel Yenkevich and William Yenkevich; sister, Dorothy Dombroski; and granddog bassett hounds, Jake and Toby.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:30 am on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at Holy Family R.C., E. Chestnut Hill and Gender Roads, Newark, DE. Friends and family may call at church from 10:30 am until 11:30 am. Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor, 185 Salem Church Road, Newark, DE 19713, the Newark Senior Center, 200 Whitechapel Drive, Newark, DE 19713 or to the Bassett Rescue of Old Dominion, 3445 Seminole Trail, Box 248, Charlottesville, VA 22911.
